The free .info that is offered by sites look www.domainsite.com and www.namesecure.com - are there any catches or any kind of obligations? I was thinking of registering one but if I don't want it after the year is up, I don't want to be stuck paying for it.

    Thank you.

The .info registry (Afilias) is offering free one-year .info domains to all registrars. Dotster is also participating in this promotion.

Absolutely always pay for your domain. "Free" domains may not always be registered in your name so you have no legal control over them, especially when they expire.

And when you pay for a domain, make sure you print off the receipt you get so you've got a hardcopy of proof of purchase in case a domain name dispute occurs. This has happened with a client of mine in the past.

I suggest you always to pay for your domains. Use "free" or "promotional" deals only when you pay for a both hosting and domains. That does not mean a registar or a host will rob you. But if your domain is important for you then go and pay it.
