Please somebody! what do I do next? Someone actually agreed to sell me their domain name! I've never bought a name from someone who already owned it. It's a .com. Do I need a lawyer? Are there any papers I have to send for this person to sign and where do I get them? I had no idea there'd be papers invovled.

It shouldn't be all that complicated. All the former owner needs to do is either login to his/her control panel for the domain or call his/her domain registrar and put the information in your name. Then you pay him.

You may, however, want to get a contract signed indicating the nature of the transaction just so that both parties are clear as to what will occur and when (and it protects you in court). The only other piece of paper I personally would get is a receipt for tax purposes.
