I was just wondering if the physical distance to your host's servers should be a consideration in choosing a web hosting company?

    Thanks!

A web hosting company really needs to have a good connection and good service. I don't think it matters that much if they are close to you or not from this respect.

It would matter for support. If they are in the same timezone (or close one), or if they are in the same country, you know pretty much when they are awake and are phone-able or not.

It should be in the same country. Other than that, it doesn't matter much because it depends on how the packets are routed to and from your host and you.

Just out of curiosity, if physical distance doesn't matter, why should you be in the same country??

    Thanks again!!

Mainly for support reasons: not to generalize, but hosts outside of the US/UK/other major countries are often fly-by-night operations.

    Thanks filburt1,

But if I live in Canada, is it okay to host with a company in the US? Or does this even matter?

Yes, that would be acceptable, I would think.

    Great, thanks!!

I've been really interested in using Dreamhost because they seem really good but I just wanted to cover all my bases before committing to anything.

    Thanks for your help!
