I'm in the process of making a website for my old high school. If you look here:

    http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/canschs/

you can see the current site leaves alot to be desired.

I'm going to design a sample page, then present (market) it to them and hope they snap it up. Just a few questions however.

    1. I read that the DfES has allocated every school in the country a domain name of the form of:

    www.schoolname.county.sch.uk

How would I go about registering it to my school?

    2. Any idea if schools are allocated webspace for their websites by the government?

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

    There's some info here:
    http://www.nominet.org.uk/SecondLeve...Domains/schuk/

From my experience of school websites, most tend to go for a co.uk or org.uk etc as the .sch.uk domain can be a pain to set up and move.

I don't know what costs are involved or how to go about it exactly.

You cannot register a subdomain unless you own the domain already.

Well apperently the domain will be provided by the government for the school. Every school has a domain reserved for them.

How to go about getting it registered is the question.

Also, anyone who has done school web design before, is it common for them to provide the webspace?

I have worked as a contractor to a designer who has 108 schools under her belt with another 80 booked in.

She provides the hosting and charges an annual fee which includes some maintenance to the site.

The schools here are supposed to get webspace provided by the local LEA, but it is REALLY basic and difficult to use. So much so that most don't bother with it at all and host externally. She doesn't bother with sch.uk names either, she uses .co.uk etc.

Excellent. How acurate would it be as I don't have access to a Mac or safari so that would be very useful to me.

My latest site looks perfect in it :-) www.rcthosting.com
