How do I install postgresql on a Linux server? I have the IP address and root login and no clue about server admin stuff. What now?

You'll have to find out what distribution is installed.

I'm pretty sure this should cover most cases:

    RedHat (fairly likely):
    Code:
    # yum install postgresql
    Debian (fairly likely):
    Code:
    # apt-get install postgresql
    Gentoo (very unlikely):
    Code:
    # emerge postgresql
As I mentioned above, it's most likely you'll be running RedHat or Debian. If you're not sure, just try running those and see what happens. They should give you an error if something goes wrong

Once you have it installed, you'll need to start it. Configuration/startup differ from distro to distro, but often you'll get some instructions as soon as you're done installing. If not, it's worth trying:
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/postgresql start
