.org is usually taught in school to be trustworthy and useful.
So...how is this usually true? How do you 'register' an ORG domain? Do you have to prove you own a non-profit organization?

    Thank you,

Anybody can register any of the main three TLDs they want. I own one (formerly two as of a few days ago) domains that are .org domains. WDF is a .net domain, yet it is not a network provider. $3 will get you a .org domain for one year.

Only .edu qualifies as something educational, and even, there's not total control over what appears on a .edu domain.

    Wait...so .org doesn't necessarily mean a non-profit organization?

    .org means nothing.

It was designed to differentiate non-profit, but it doesn't... anybody can buy a .org... in many cases people buy them automatically to protect their trademark... microsoft.org for instance... doesn't seem to resolve though the whois shows quite clearly it's Microsoft, so I guess Bill's henchmen decided that it probably wasn't in their interests to be selling very overpriced operating systems and office suites from a .org.
