generally, if you host ur page with a hosting company, will you be able to just access the page via the IP they give you ? then is that the IP you will have to specify to the place where you register the domain name ?

    1. Register the domain name (not using the host)
    2. Buy hosting
    3. Transfer the domain's DNS entries to the hosting company's DNS servers

They give you an IP but for shared hosting it's not likely to work by itself. For example http://64.21.160.2/~filburt1/ works, but http://64.21.160.2/ doesn't.

so the DNS will basically redirect it to a subfoder, but display as the domain name that you registered. (www.feduib.com) ?

but if you access it directly you'll have to access it in its actual folder? if you know what i'm saying.

I sorta do. The way I understand it, your domain name is a kind of alias to an IP, but the host knows what domain name made the request and responds accordingly.

aaaah, ok. so its dot 100% necessary to have a registered domain ? so i can just have a host and access them by the actual path ? (like: http://www.host.com/mine/)

but if i buy a domain then i can have www.mine.com redirect (i know its more than just a redirection, but i find the term a lot easier to use) to the place that it is hosted ?

Things will be much smoother with a domain, and most hosts require one anyway. My old host wouldn't work without one.

    They're less than $9 at http://www.godaddy.com/ , what's the holdup?

If your host gives you a dedicated IP you could access your site through that without a domain, anytime.

However I wouldnít tell them that you donít plan to put a domain there because that is usually a sign of a spammer, or at least that has been my experience.

Other than that one benefit, there really isnít any reason to get a dedicated IP though when a shared one will work just as well (when the domain resolves).

You only need a dedicated IP for SSL or Anonymous FTP. But yes you could access your page by the IP if you had a dedicated.
