Do you guys generally make use of two or more hosts at a time?

Judging by all the stuff on here about getting a 'cheap' host, I take it you always keep a couple of them on the go for putting up temporary sites and stuff.

I'm assuming that you use a more reliable (possibly more expensive) host for you main site and the sites of important clients ... is that correct?

On a side note, it is interesting to note how the market has changed - almost in parallel - for both hosts and web designers. We hosts are currently being undercut with 'free' and $0.99 hosts in the same way that someone wanting a web site doesn't need to pay hundreds of dollars any more when they can pick up a template for $20.

it's a competitive business to be in...there's a lot of people out there looking for handouts. The market is flooded with hosting companies, it'll take some work to get clients. A suggestion I have is start with people you know, then use the best tool of all for advertising "word of mouth". Hang in there...

I use an expensive host for Transio ($27 a month or so), and less expensive host for other projects ($6 - $10 a month).

Soon, I'm gonna dump them all, though, and host all my sites from my house :-P

Be careful though trans...some isp's won't allow you to host your own sites. Check it out first.

Transio... did you finally get that OC-48 hooked up to your bathroom???

For my web stuff and for clients, we go through a friend of a friend. So far, the uptime has been great, however response time has been ok, just not instantaneous. Emergencies have always been fast though, so it's kewl. Very cheap as well. We re-sell some of the webspace also, and it's all worked out great so far.

Aaahhhh... so you finally came out of the closet? (groan)

Personally for my own web developing projects, I'm setting up a server I'm due to get on 9/5. Only internal access, but will speed up development that currently involves uploading any test info to my offsite server.

Self-hosting? Oh, no - not for anything important, I hope! Or am I just a coward? Either way, I prefer to pay more for important sites to those who know how to best.

I host my own sites. However, I do use a couple of other hosts, especially for stuff that is not supported on my own server, like ASP.NET, etc.

I will have 2 servers at home... a windows 2000 server w/ .net extensions and SQL Server 2000, and a linux box w/ postgresql, php, and so on.

I don't see why I shouldn't host my sites at home... I have so many... it just doesn't make sense to pay for them all.

EDIT: especially since i'm not really profiting off of them
