When you look up a site's whois info, is the "Last updated" info refer to the date the owner last revised his domain info, or is it record last updated in reference to the host provider?

Can anyone confirm this? With any reference to where it says it is by the owner that the "Last Updated" is by?

Just looked over some random sites, I'm 95% sure now, seeing that I've never changed my info on my site, and I don't have that line on my whois, whereas WDF has one from 5/31/03.

I'm fairly sure that it's when anybody updates any aspect of it (registrar updates their part, owner updates DNS entries, etc.).

    There are sometimes two:

One pertains to any update by the registrant. The other pertains to when the registrar last updated the database.

Uncensored-Host is correct. The "last-updated" date can refer to a change on the part of either the registrar or the registrant.

However, a word of caution: the dates provided by the registrar may not be accurate. I have one client who registered a domain name in 1997 and has been using it since 1999. However, according to the Network Solutions database, they've only been around since 2002.

I think NSI made some major database/system changes in 2002 that has caused this. I've got one domain there that's been online since 96 and it also shows 2002. I am unsure if this is when we renewed or if they restored some data from a backup or what . . .

That's entirely possible. NSI isn't exactly known for sticking to the status quo or doing things that make sense to the normal world, so it's well within the range of believability.
