    Hello...

    I am creating a site for a youth group at a church. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the basic differences between .com, .org, .net, etc...

    I've seen that many church type websites use .org...but why is that?

    Most of the sites that I've built use the .com domain, but if all three are available, what is the main reason for using one over the other?
    Does tax exemptness have anything to do with it?

    Thank you for any help on this!

    .com = commercial
    .net = network (my, how I violated that with this domain)
    .org = organization (usually non-profit)

    You should get a .org. It's the same price. Taxes don't apply to domain names that I know of.

    Thanks Filburt!

    I was wondering - from you post...

    Are those guidelines "general" or strictly enforced somewhere? It seems like it must just be like a tag or give an idea to the person going to the site what sort of site they're about to view.?.?

    You've helped already. Thanks

    They're general. Obviously WDF is not a network provider but I chose that domain (although I would have taken .com had squatters not stolen it). The others such as .gov and .edu are enforced, but normal citizens cannot register those in the first place.

    There are no "regulations" for the one's you're talking about sadly.. And then there's .biz, .us, etc... More of guidelines. BUT, search engine rankings DO matter. If you want to be listed high in some sort of "orginazation" a .org will give you higher rankings. Same with "canada" for .ca etc.

    Stick with .org for a church website.
    But if you have few extra dollars, I would definitely register both .com and .org.
