Upon reviewing a host for another person, I happened to stumble upon this website:

    http://www.domainsbyproxy.com

If you are considering signing up for this (or if you have already), please avoid this particular company. The reason is that the domain name ends up becoming the property of Domains by Proxy (even though you paid for it) and although they are rather upfront about taking ownership of the domain name, the full ramifications of this statement may not be obvious. So please don't use this, or any other company who will take ownership of your domain name, no matter what the reason may be.

If you want to register a domain name privately, the best way is to register your domain name with a free email account and no personally identifiable information (a PO box is always a good idea for information of this nature).

Also be carefull of companies offering non standard GTLd's (a GTLd is like com net org name etc.)
Some companys offer like http://monkeyboy.monkeyhouse/ which utilizes a browser plug-in to do the name direction to something along the lines of http://monkeyhouse.dodgyplugincompany.com/

These domains are not favoured by Search Engines and they won't work with like 99% of web users.

Actually, this isn't a scam at all.

It's intended to serve people who don't WANT to own their domain names.

Who are those people, you might ask? Well here's a list:
    • SPAM-COMMERCE SITES who are trying to sell something, and get domain names cancelled by UUNET all the time who don't want their business name black listed
    • PORN SCAM SITES who charge up 1000 people in a day and then get the site black-listed (no need to spend bandwidth costs or hosting costs now), who have a clause in the user agreement that if they get shut down by an external source (like UUNET), they don't have to return the money for membership (usually annual).
    • CREDIT COUNSELING COMPANIES and LOAN COMPANIES who really need to span a lot to get new members, but can't present their corporation as a spamming corp, so they make temporary domains to do so

These are only a few that I can think of that use that type of service. I used to do some e-Marketing work for companies in the Credit Counseling sector, so we dealt with issues like that. However, we found ways around it by using domains "owned" by other individuals.

This is just a service that makes it easier

Cancel that... I just read up on their agreement. They're an anti-spam company.

The purpose of their service is to prevent identity theft and spamming from WHOIS database information.

The contract says that at any time, the registrant can take the name back from them and cancel his account, at which time they will transfer the domain back to him.

Seems legit to me. They're just going after the sector of the market that's gotten their identity stolen or spam attacked from the WHOIS database.

Yeah, I figured out after they're actually a GoDaddy company. My bad on this one. It just looked really really shady on the surface.
