    Hi All,

I wanted to register a domain name, and have been doing some research on how to do so. I have a list of Domain Registrars, however I have also read that web hosting companies can also provide this service to you if you use them as your host. I'm just wondering if it would make sense to register my domain name first before shopping for a web hosting company or just sign up with a web hosting company and get the domain name from them?

    Thaks for any advice!

    JP

Best to register yourself and then get web hosting. Some web hosts will hold your domain name hostage if you register with them and attempt to go to a different host later.

www.directnic.com is a great one, albeit a bit higher priced than others, but it's got an easy GUI to deal with. www.mydomain.com is a cheaper one that's also great, but I've found that it's a bit less GUI friendly, but has more features.

    I've always used namecheap.com or spry.com

Another vote for Namecheap. They have a good management interface and unlike GoDaddy don't try to push a bunch of useless crap on you.

Its always better to keep this two things apart from each others. I have heard some horrible stories for clients when the time comes to get transfer hosts.
