Well WOW it's been heaps of months since I've posted here, gotta say it's good to be back.

Anyway, what brings me back is that I'm looking into domain registration for a site I'm going to build soon, and I haven't done this before.

Basically, what I want to know is what is the differene between "domain registering" and "website hosting"?

For example, here http://crazydomains.com.au/domain_names/register.html you can register your domain name.
And here http://crazydomains.com.au/web_hosting/index.html you get website hosting.

With the web hosting, do you get your own domain? I'm a bit unclear on the domain V web hosting. Could someone please explain this to me?

Domain registration means you're registering (through one company or another) your domain name, e.g. google.com, with ICANN. Stricktly speaking you never OWN the domain, just kinda renting the URL every year.

Paying for website hosting means you're paying a company to host your actual HTML (etc.) files on one of their servers. You tell your domain registrar your DNS (domain name sysetm) info from your host, and they help propagate that info across the net, so that when someone goes to your domain name (e.g. google.com), their computer knows to go to an IP of your webhost where the files are located.

Da Magic of da magical tubes!

Thanks Wired. So I would need to get both DNS and web hosting?

Most shared web hosting providers offer a free domain when you sign up with them for web hosting. So make sure that you check first to see if they do.

Technically you do not need a domain name to host a website. You can simply signup for web hosting at any web hosting company and simply use an IP address they give you such as 70.84.1.80 (IP address for webdesignforums.net). However, if you want people, friends, family to go to your website you would have to tell them to enter in the IP address in the browser. Now I dont know about you but I think its inconvienent and a hassle to have to remember numbers to visit a website.

Thats where the domain name come in. Instead of having to remember numbers such as 70.84.1.80 to visit webdesignforums.net, isn't it easier to just type webdesignforums.net in the browser address bar? So, you should have both. Register a domain and then host that domain with a web hosting company.

Domain registration means you're registering the name of your website over internet, and buying the domain e,g. .com,.net,.in,.edu etc according to the availability. Many web hosting providers offer a free domain when you sign up with them for web hosting.

Domain registration is process of getting registering the rights to your domains. And webhosting is the host that hold your actual site.

basically the Domain name is the name of your website and the Host is where you will display your website on the web. You can usually set them up from your hosting company or buy the domain and point it towards the host

Okay...you bumped a dead thread and added nothing to it. What was the point of that?
