    Hi everyone,

I recently registered 2 domains from google and I want to host them.

WS #1: Kinda a blog, but I want to integrate videos into it (which I can do via embedding Youtube). So, Wordpress for this one? I would still like to be able to host it somewhere else if Wordpress doesn't work out.

WS #2: Will be a database where users can enter/retrieve information. It's a small project I'm doing for a nonprofit for a friend and I need a relatively large database (10K entries minimum) with only a few text fields.

Question 1) Can I create databases using Wordpress?

Question 2) I have no problem programming, is Wordpress easy to manipulate or is it strictly use their template and you cannot customize? Have you heard of Coffeecup software? I need some good database website tools (nothing super expensive like Adobe)

Question 3) I also want to mirror some other domains that I registered using Google to these 2 main websites, is that done on the Google side or the host side?

Question 4) Given my situation, what host do you think is appropriate? I have no idea about the bandwidth needs but it should be fairly average. I was thinking either of these 3 hosts:

    http://www.simplyhosting.net/
    http://www.bigbluehost.com/windows-hosting.html
    299host.net

Does Wordpress require a host whatsoever?? Does it have ads?

    Thank you!

    1) Yes, you can. WordPress uses a MySQL backend (usually).

    2) I'm not a PHP guy and I don't like WordPress, but it's pretty easy to do. You might want to look at phpMyAdmin for database manipulation, though. It's ugly as sin, but it's easy enough to use.

    3) Host side.

    4) No, and no. I'm just not sure if you can customize it if you can host it on Wordpress.com.

The only thing you need to watch is if you use a free template. A lot of them have ads embedded into the template, and some of them are really shady.

http://www.sectorlink.com would be my recommendation for a host. They're who I use. I also have no experience with any of the three you've mentioned.

I use Hostmonster and love 'em - super support and one-click Wordpress installation - you can host as many domains as you want either as add-ons or as subs-domains. The multiple domains are unlimited in theory - I haven't pushed it too far, I've got about 7 actual working sites on one account there right now, and several subdomains in testing phase - I've got a total of 23 databases to play with at the moment.

I have used Coffee Cup software in the past and it was dependable and useful, but lately I mostly use HTML-kit (free download editor) or Notepad++. I do own Dreamweaver but I don't use it much - the WYSIWYG "design" view is totally useless and never shows the layout as it really is. I do sometimes use it for accordions and such if I'm in a hurry, but there are much better ways of doing almost everything than using DW.

WordPress is fun to play with (I know TheGame doesn't like it but then not everyone likes everything - some people even like golf, or so I hear!) I think at WordPress.com you can do some customization - just not sure how much. But if you have it installed on your own server you can customize to your heart's content.

If you want to e-mail me (see my sig) I will send you some links to several sites I have done in WP to show you how different they can be, both in looks and in functionality. (I don't want to post too many links here in case it looks like spamming, which I hate.)

Thanks guys! Interesting how I got a response from a Montrealer and Torontonian! I'm originally from Montreal I went to McGill!

Good to know about the "free" templates. Also a good idea to compare websites and then judge that way. I'll send you a message AM...

It seems as though there is no clear answer to my q's and I'll have to do more research.

I totally agree, golf is super pointless!!

I would like to recommend you to go online and search the review's of that website you wanted to serve. There are plenty of website where you can find reviews for a particular website you are planning for, such that you have to opt for the service you are getting it.
