Okay, so I hear that Ubuntu One is a cloud hosting service that comes with Ubuntu. Since Ubuntu is free, wouldn't hosting clouds be a complete waste of money for them, especially since they're non-profit. If they are somehow doing it for free, my question is HOW?

    What ?

    Ubuntu provides the software...

You run multiple servers in multiple locations running the service to create your own cloud that you can then connect to and use for your own purposes, encrypt all of the communications and transactions between servers and clients and you have a secure cloud.
