Thats where my client lives, i suppose it doesn't need to be NYC but might be helpful. After a cheap hosting comp so i can give them quotes.

There's a difference between "cheap" and "good value". Might want to let him know that.

I'd give my usual Sectorlink recommendation. I know they support PHP and I know they'll handle things properly.

Yeah, FYI unless its a colo where the client needs to visit the physical server location, where the servers are really makes no difference.

Millions of people host on servers and have no idea where they physically are.

As for cloud hosting, as well as any other hosting for that matter.

I have a friend that works out of the SF BAY area, but his physical servers are in Phoenix, NJ, Atlanta, Sidney aust.

There are many things to consider when selecting a hosting provider, but I can honestly tell you, if cheap is a primary key to the selection, then none of the real factors matter.

Not saying you have to pay a lot to get good hosting, my reseller account servers are located in Phoenix and none of my customers care or can even tell, but because the server farm is so close to the Internet backbone ( not buried on some remote node 3 hops off ), the sites respond quickly ... I've had servers as close as Atlanta ( I'm on the east coast ), that were no where near as fast as the ones in Phoenix. It's all dependant on the people that manage the servers and connectivity and infrastructure.
