New template-based site/ old site domain questions

I currently have a website hosted on Inmotion have absolutely nothing bad to say about - they have been totally helpful, but the site is old and clunky and I'm moving to a template-based service and scrapping the old site. Since the template has its own host, I'm wondering what happens to my domain name? I'm most likely going to choose a new domain, but I would like to set up a redirect on the old domain to the new site.. I've pre-paid Inmotion for the next 6 months, but after my contract expires, is there a way for me to keep hold of that domain and keep the redirect on it, without paying for full hosting service? Or would I need to renew my contract with Imnotion and continue paying full hosting fees for only the redirect?

I would also like to keep the email accounts and have them forwarded, I believe that I can set that up through gmail but haven't figured out if I would need to wait until the domain is "free" from the current host?

Another option would be to keep the same domain and have it transferred to the template-based host, right?

I'm sure this is a common-sense question, but any advice would be much appreciated!
    Thank you!

That would depend on your new host.

Personally, I wouldn't choose a new domain for it. I'd use the same one and point it to the new host, then cancel the old hosting once domain propagation has taken effect. People might already have the old domain bookmarked, and if search engines know about it, you're going to set yourself back with a new domain. I'm also assuming that you didn't register your domain with your host (that's a dangerous game at the best of times).

I also wouldn't recommend moving to a "template-based service" if I were you. Most of the time, they're limited and inflexible and cost far more than they need to. This might be an argument for a "CMS", or "content management system", that can be installed on Inmotion. Apparently they allow you to install a whole bunch of things at no charge on their servers. I'd avoid W*rdPr*ss myself (it's a giant piece of Swiss cheese), but there should be something you can install. That way, you keep your old provider, don't need to transfer anything over other than moving stuff to your new CMS, and it'll be a lot less hassle and headache.

Thank you for the advice. I would like to use a new domain, as the focus of my business has changed... basically I used to create one type of product, and now I have 2 lines that are doing equally well, so I'd like the new domain to reflect that. I think that a redirect will suit me fine there. As for the template-based site, my issue there is that I'm not a fantastic web designer, nor do I have the time to devote a lot of time to updating the complicated site I originally designed, and for me, ease of creating new pages to reflect new work and ease of uploading photos far outweighs the limitations. I've been using Squarespace and am VERY impressed with how customizable it is, also with fully integrated e-commerce and social media options. It may cost a bit more, but for my needs, it will be worth it in time saved updating.

I did register the domain with my host, I didn't know that was a bad idea... Does that complicate things?

Unfortunately, yes, it can. It's not common, but a lot of hosting packages "include a free domain", which the host registers seemingly on your behalf, but when the domain is queried is actually "owned" by them. There's usually some clause where when you signed up, you "agreed" to this, even though it effectively amounts to a theft of intellectual property. It can be a real hassle to get it back as well. I have no dealings with Inmotion and therefore I don't know how they specifically handle this...some handle it well, some don't. But it's possible that they'll be in the "don't" camp, so you'll need to be prepared for htat.

What I would ask Squarespace is if they can do a 301 redirect from your old domain to your new one. Use that specific term...a 301 redirect. This is about as simple of an explanation as to why you want a 301 redirect, and it comes directly from the mouth of the horse that would have the most interest in the topic besides you: 301 redirects - Webmaster Tools Help
