Which web hosting site do you recommend?

I am new to webdesign so I could use some advice to get started. Which web hosting sites do you recommend, and why?
What are the things I should look for in a good web hosting service?

    Hi, and welcome to WDF.

Fast support, fast servers, little downtime are our priorities in web hosting.

I could recommend you several dozen hosting companies that can give you all of that. My personal choice of host is Hostmantis. http://www.hostmantis.com

I ordered another reseller from them this morning and and saw on their Twitter page they still have a 60% off for life coupon. https://twitter.com/HostMantis

Stay away from the EIG host is another recommendation I'll give you.

I am no way an affiliate of Hostmantis or any other hosting company.

    Good luck.

I believe no one could tell you exactly which web hosting provider can meet your particular needs and expectations. Do the research on different forums and hosting offers sections, check out the reviews (and keep in ming that some of them are paid for - non-objective), then narrow down your list and contact each of the providers yourself. Check out their support, how prompt, efficient, knowledgeable, helpful and professional it is. A lot will depend on your relationship with the hosting support team. Hosting provider company must have 24/7 support and you should be able to contact them via email, online chat, Skype or telephone. There should also be a decent trial period with money back guarantee. When you compare the service, prices and plans, then you can make the right decision. You don't want to change your web hosting provider often and that is why to be well informed before making a decision.

www.sectorlink.com is my recommendation, as it has been for several years.

    The reasons are pretty simple:

    1) The prices are reasonable for the services offered.
    2) and more importantly, the service and support is the best I've seen by a wide margin. There isn't anyone out there, especially in the Windows hosting space, that can hold a candle to these guys when it comes to support. This is the most important thing you can look for...your website is a business, and you want people that will back your business and go balls to the wall to make sure it works the way it's supposed to.

I'm not an affiliate, either. I'm just a customer of 13.5 years. That's something else you should look for...companies that have been around for a while.

bleau canon also made a good point...avoid any host under the EIG umbrella of brands (HostGator, BlueHost, etc.) Never, ever, ever use an EIG host under any circumstances. They're terrible.

I use GoDaddy and that is all that I have used, and wouldn't recommend them. So I wont recommend anyone, but I decided to chime in to show you that a company's reputation shouldn't be based on their marketing budget. Just because you see GoDaddy everywhere and don't hear much negative about them doesn't make them a good company. Their customer service is HORRIBLE! You will be on hold for awhile and they don't always have a solution to a problem, nor seem to want to find one once the answer isnt one that is on their cue cards of answers. I find it funny that the people I call to help do not know as much or more than I do. I don't know what it takes to get hired there but the people who answer the phones don't seem to know much about troubleshooting a hosting issue. Hell I can safely assume the ones I have spoken with probably have never owned even a shared hosting account!

My point is to always speak to people who have used the host first and dont use those "best webhost" lists you might find online. These are essentially just lists of who paid to be featured on the list.

And just to pound it in there I will repeat the suggestion to NEVER USE EIG! Just don't.. If you need to know why you can easily find examples on why they are horrible. I had to know why and looked it up, it surprises me anyone would use any of their hosts after reading issues people have had with them.

I'll second the GoDaddy "unrecommendation". They lost an SQL Server database of a client of mine and couldn't get it back. You don't do that if you're a host. Ever. In Linuxese, that's like losing a MySQL database.
