    Facebok and search factor

Lots of companies are using social media for branding and promotion.
Facebook has cauught on the fancy of many business houses.
Promotion for many begins in Facebook (!!! Why don't they explore other possibilities)

Facebook will catch on a lot in the search arena. Google know that and i am sure they are working overtime

Makes sense that Google would use Likes to verify the validity of traffic, in cases where it's available, but since Like is installed on websites by owner's choice, you can't expect Google to hurt people who don't have it.

I would say "Like" only has the potential to hurt you if you're an SEO hack, because the traffic you're getting would likely fail Google's Like test.

Yeah, you can bet that the big G has already been factoring in highly "liked" sites into their returns and it would be entirely possible that this could be a factor that means nothing to search returns or even detrimental to sites in the future, depending on how the quality of the highly liked sites match Googles existing criteria.

I agree, Fb is more used for promotion, while Google for search. But the system is almost the same - in both Google and Fb you may see top lies or top requests, so basily the main interests of ppl

Yes, exactly! using facebook you can expect traffic to your site but Google leads so ahead in the race of search from this.

to be expected. more and more businesses are implementing blogs, social media, and even connecting with other businesses online as a way of spreading their web presence and getting more for their marketing dollar. with any luck this movement will be the final push that breaks the back of email campaigns and moves newsletters to legitimate platforms. anything that takes away from email marketing is a plus in my book. blue$ky/300 facebook/priceless :P

well.. FB likes could measure popularity, just like the well-known and so questioned PR, so there is a point here

I don't mean to bump an old thread, but in this case, there's new information that is relevant.

YouTube - Does Google use data from social sites in ranking?

I think it's a bad move on the part of big G (everyone's going to start selling Facebook likes and Twitter followers hardcore now), but they've announced it.
