...and as those of us who have paid attention to this for the past several years could predict, ruins the concept for others.

This is why social media sites or any other site that allows for open public input will always fail unless monitored with vigilance...the second it's opened up, someone is going to manipulate it, tell others, and others will manipulate it as well.
Some of the blame lies with Google here. They of all people should know this. Of course, there's nothing saying they don't and haven't already factored something in to take care of schemes like this (assuming of course, this does have a ranking benefit, and there really isn't a reason for Google to include it otherwise). But the majority of the blame always lies with the manipulator.

I do hope Google isn't stupid enough to base rankings on that system. It probably didn't. The +1 thing should just be a way of informing people whether a site is good or not at a glance. But then again, Plused ruins that too

Exactly, George. Whether the intentions were to simply provide a "rating" or this has a ranking effect (and there's nothing Google has indicated one way or the other), it's just been crapped all over.

I think many of us predicted this and none of us should be surprised.
I found a site offering "100 +1s for $5, 500 for for $20" and so on. It was everything I could do to keep from sending them an email explaining how far off base they were with the whole concept. I also wanted to ask them who was sitting at a PC for several hours per day creating Google profiles to fake the +1s from.
Of course, it would be a waste of time because they don't care. They are just hoping to make a few bucks before Google pulls their site down or the rest of the world catches on (we hope).

    Yeah, it is horrible.
It's like walking through a carnival and having people shout invitations from every direction. "Just a dollar a throw! Try your luck!"
Temptation for a seemingly great deal for a great low price; then you walk away with no money left in your pockets and no valuable prize in your hands to show for it.

What I don't get about it is that the +1 concept is to show interests to other people who are already your friends AND have a gmail account. If people understand this, nobody would buy +1s from unknown profiles.

In my opinion, on top of the annoyance from discovering someone selling useless "likes" that I mentioned before, there is not much use for +1. It just sounds like a new way for Google to entice more people into their cloud. Maybe I'm wrong.
