Astroturfing fines in New York State

For those who don't know what "astroturfing" is, it's the idea of posting fake reviews on review sites such as Yelp, Google, etc. on various sites in an effort to "market" a business.

Apparently the New York State DA's office set up a sting and nailed 19 so-called "SEO/reputation management" companies to the wall for being scummy and stupid and misleading consumers.

It's funny, I read about this a couple of hours ago on another forum; they didn't bother to use the term "astroturfing" though. They referred to another publisher - Forbes I believe.

Yeah, it's not commonly used. I've heard of it myself, but only for a couple of months.

For those who don't know why this is called astroturfing, it refers to the fact that the reviews are fake, like fake grass (i.e. astroturf).
