    like it?
    hate it?
    improvements?

Note: I know that not all of the pages validate as XHTML, but that's because I haven't gone through all 345 entries and added a blank alt attribute to all the <img> tags
I'm saving that for when I finish the rest of the code :P

Note #2: I know that sidebar looks pretty weak, I would like some suggestions on that too
As for those date seperators, they're mainly there to show everything the script can do, I'm pretty sure no one really finds them attractive

    p.s thanks!

I don't like it. But I'm not exactly sure why... Maybe it's the curved boxes and drop shadows used for your journal items that spoil the geometric look of the site, or the sidebar which you have two many dates on; either only show dates from 2004 or have collapsable years, because it really puts my eye off reading your content.

Your colour scheme also needs to be more consistent, you have these shades of a kinda pistachio green which is broken apart by solid hits of white, if you want to use white you need more whitespace, or go in the other direction of just using lighter shades of the green on the journal boxes and the top right rollovers.

This site is appealing to my sense of simplicity, but the washed out colors and lack of graphical content would prevent me from returning to this site. My big philosophy in web design is to engage the user, without that, you have little or no reason for the "user" to come back.

I'm sure the blogs you have are interesting, but they sure don't look it. It would be certainly nice to have at least one contrast color somwhere in your site.

All in all it's a fundamentally well designed site(as far as coding goes), but as far as your design skills, it needs much improvement! Good luck!

I was thinking the same thing about those rounded boxes
do you think rounding off the whole site and taking the shadow away from the main div would make much improvement?

and as for the collapsable years, that's not the way the code works, however, the calendar, month list and categories are all collapsable, they're just defaulted to show uncollapsed, I will probably take that out once I finish everything

I went with the black on white for the journal entries because I figured that is the most readable, and since it is the most important content, that it would make it stick out more
    I guess I was wrong?

    excellent!

as for graphics, hmmmm, I'm not much into making those, aside from simple gradients and things like that
they're not my forté and I don't consider them a necessity at all

as I said above, I went with black on white because of read/noticeability
so it looks like I will be changing the colors of the entries, but I doubt to a contrasting color
I'll try adding the contrast to the menus, and making the background for the "data" div something that seperates the journal entries from the sidebar, with a solid white for the journal entries and another color for the sidebar
do you think that would improve much?

    thanks for the critiques!

it works for me. i'd only say one tiny thing which is that the "skip" line of navigation could use some left-padding. i like the rounded corners!

that's why you don't ask for advice on design, cuz opinions are like-- well, you know, everyone's got one.

i am assuming you'll be adding META tags, description, etc, unless it is your intent not to be search-engine friednly, which is a possibility i suppose.

    oh, happy belated birthday!

    do you mean more left-padding?
either way, that wouldn't be a problem at all!

oh you know it, but that will just be simply adding those META tags to the proper .tpl file, so it's no priority
