    Hello,

I run http://www.80four.co.uk itís an Adobe Photoshop and Webmaster resource site. Its been running for about 3 years and has lots of free content.

I've just updated the site to a cleaner version. Last time I'm going to do it all with notepad! I wanted the design to be very easy to navigate, so people find the content. The site is also very image light, to avoid high bandwidth (shame but the site gobbles a few gigs), but hopefully still looks stylish.

Please let me know what you think, if you find a dead link plese let me know.

Also if any of you run Google Adsense on your sites do you ever get random irrelevant adverts, like on these pages:
http://www.80four.co.uk/tutorials/crescent.html (I get sheet metal cutting?!)
    http://www.80four.co.uk/tutorials/stencil.html (I get construction jobs?!)

Feel free to post a hello in the forum,
    Cheers
    Ian

It look pretty basic, but I have no problem with that. It's easy on the eyes. The content is excellent! Nice work on that.

I wish all content providing sites would be as nice to browse as your site!
If your aim is to design a light design which doesn't take a lot of bandwidth, I think you've succeeded - it's not a very artistic layout so to speak, but rather very clean. However, you use tables.. Strange if you're providing CSS tutorials...
    Code:
    <td class=line width=8><img src="../images/wl.gif" height=30 width=8></td>
    <td background="../images/wbg.gif" valign=bottom><a href="../index.php" class=menu2>home</td>
    <td class=line width=8><img src="../images/wr.gif" height=30 width=8></td>
    <td class=line>&nbsp;</td>
why not create a class where you have class="noline" instead of writing out line each time??
Also you've forgot the " - the quotation marks on the attributes.
I get 85 errors when validating your site's HTML (!!).
(On the other hand the css validates)
So you got some work to do on that... I'd like to see more advanced tutorials - especially in CSS and photoshop since I was on the verge of closing the browser since those tutorials were too basic, and didn't actually tell me anything.

    Thanks for the replies.

I will take note on the content front. Maybe I need to touch up on my html skills, they're seeming rusty.

Yeah, I need to work on the html and css. Several people have pointed that out.

Regards more advanced tutorials what sort of thing were you thinking of. If you are already of an advanced or intermediate level then you can achieve most effects or styles with a little bit of thought, or a combination of the basic techniques.

    Thanks.

In regards to your sub headings, I would like to see the extreme tracking toned down, if it were part of single typographic composition or such I would understand. As it's not, I find it fairly irritating as it's so much more effort to simply read what's written there. It also comes across as loose and messy. Would you consider optimizing the sub headings for readability?

Apart from that issue I think it's a good site; and I also agree that your content is quite viewable. One last thing though, it almost feels like the grey colour used on your navigation sets the whole tone of the site, have you experimented with yellow/orange? It might give it a bit more bite.

Thanks for the feedback. The extreme tracking image is hidden internet explorer, so I'm assuming your using firefox? I could cover the image over with a div, but I don't want to remove it.

What do you mean by: Would you consider optimizing the sub headings for readability?

Do you mean intensifying the colours?

No, I mean get rid of the large-letter spacing on the blue headings because it's harder to read, that's not a matter of opinion.

Oh the tracking on the text, I thought you meant the counter called extreme tracking that appears at the bottom of the page!

Hmm I like the character spacing, I might reduce it a little but not lots.

I've recently updated the design again, do you like the splash of colour?

Yeah, like it! I think it's much better ...
Still Trico is right - newspapers kern their headlines (i.e. decrease distance between letters) to make the observer able to read the headings faster. So put letter-spacing to -0.1em or something, not positive like it is now.
