both are good, on top looks less cluttered IMO

Yaah, I like them on the top, such as I did on my site, I usually put them on the side though. I just wanted a change.

Yeah, well thats how I like making my layouts now. I like tabs too. : )

Left is better if you have a lot of links.
Left and right if you have a LOT of links.

What the buttons meant? did you mean the nav bar. i always put the nav at the top of my sites.

On a site I am working on right now, I had the buttons on the left of the screen for the past couple of years, but I'm going to a style with a row at the top for them.
The main reason is to gain more content area for text, photos, and whatnot. I think having them at the left might be a bit easier for the user, but putting them at top leaves much more design freedom for the editor.futureal@rctech.net | R/C Tech
