    Hello Everyone,

We recently released the official version of our meta-search engine, www.zapmeta.com, after being eight months in beta. Please provide us your input on the following factors:

    1. Speed - Fast? Average? Slow?
What do you think of ZapMeta's speed comparing to other meta search engines?

    2. Advanced Search and Preferences - Useful or Useless?
Advanced search enables users to restrict their search and the ability to customize the output of their results. Preferences is made to work in conjunction with advanced search. In other words, if you change a value in preferences, it will also be reflected in advanced search if the value is present.

    3. Design - Visually appealing or overloaded with graphics?
What do you think of our effort in trying to put a distinction between ZapMeta's design and the plain html design of most search engines?

    4. Result Relevancy - On the mark or not close at all?
We wanted ZapMeta to return relevant results, so sponsored links will never be included in the actual results (unless selected in preferences). Along with our smart algorithm, ZapMeta is able to produce more relevant results than most meta search engines. Or at least that's what we think, let us know your thoughts.

    5. Bugs and Errors
Please report any bug or error if you encounter them.

Anything you dislike or like? Please let us know, all feedback, comments, and/or suggestions are highly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Kevin

    Quick view is very nice.

Design--slightly overcomplicated I think. It has a good look, and it's very functional.

Advanced search is fine, preferences fine but useless.

    Don't like:

    1. Sponsored links at all because it leads me to believe the other links can be coerced into being more "important" than others
    2. Overgraphicsness of it...Google only uses a single graphic on its home page.
    3. 3.6 million sites is extremely low compared to Google's 3,083,324,652 sites.

Not bad, it's a little heavy on the graphics, but it's pleasing to the eye. The only thing that distinguishes you from the million other small search engines I've seen is the "quick view" link next to each result, which is a cool concept. The search engine was a little slow for me though, and not as accurate as Google (because of the volume of sites google has indexed), so I wont be switching search engines. Nice work though.

    filburt1,

There are only 3.6 million sites in our directory, but ZapMeta is a meta-search engine which searches multiple search engines, including yahoo, msn, alltheweb, etc. In essence, it has access to more sites than google.

    splufdaddy,
"The search engine was a little slow for me though"

Keep in mind that ZapMeta is a meta-search engine, it must wait for all results to arrive before it can be processed and ranked. Whereas, results of a traditional search engine are stored in databases of their servers and page rank is pre-determined, thus retrieval time is much quicker.

However, a meta-search engine is able to accomplish more work in a shorter period of time. Since it is quicker to use a meta-search engine than individually visiting mutiple search engines.

    MACORA,

"Biggest Suggestion is to take off soo many sponsored links, i know you have to make money but come on."

For the currrent time being, we've decided to remove all sponsored listings in order to earn visitor's trust and a loyal following.

Thanks for all feedback and comment so far please keep them coming.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty kickass design (although I will say it's a tad bit too heavy on the graphics as well.) As META search engines go, it's definitely one of the better ones I've seen. For the most part, the queries I typed in seemed to execute in under a second.

One interesting "bug" and this may be by design: the more savvy Internet searcher has realized quite some time ago that often times the most relevant results come when one puts the exact phrase one is searching for in quotes (e.g. "Web Design Forums" will be a lot more likely to return this site). I didn't realize until after I had tried this that you had placed an "Exact Phrase" box in the bottom left corner of the second search box. Having typed in quotes already, I decided to click it and try the search again. I not only got significantly more results (210 as opposed to 170), but I got even more results than I had when it wasn't searching by exact phrase (210 vs. 149). The phrase I used was "Toronto Web Design", just so you guys can try it yourselves.

(Side note: this should also be allowed on the opening page as well.)

(Interesting side note: thanks to this search engine, I realized I rank #1 on All The Web for that term and #2 on Hotbot. That's a kickass little feature. I like that.)

Another thing that you may find pertains to your results is the regionalization of the MSN "search engine". MSN will generate very different results for a search performed on msn.ca than it will for msn.com. You may want to look at resolving the IP address of the searcher to a city, province/state, or country in order to allow for this. For example, someone looking up "Ontario orchards" may really want "Ontario, California orchards" or "Ontario, Canada orchards". Resolving the IP would go a long way toward solving that issue.

The "previous/next" thing should be centered on both the top and the bottom (as it is now) so people can find it. You may also want to look at making it a bit bigger so it's a little more distinguishable (or perhaps a light background.)

Another thing that I've noticed is missing is something I consider to be very important: "who are you, and why should I as a searcher use your meta search as opposed to doing what I usually do and search on one or two engines?" From what I can see of the results, they seem to be pretty accurate and relevant; it's just not explained very well.

The quick view feature to me is nice but it's not something I personally would use. Mind you, it's not a bad thing to have since it does have a practical purpose.

"Related Searches" is a nice feature, but you may want to move it down where the searches are themselves as opposed to the sponsored listings; that way, if people don't find what they want in the first few listings, they can click to the right and try something else.

Please don't interpret this as anything more than constructive criticism because overall, I do like the way the site looks and functions. There's just some stuff that needs to be thought through a little more.

    1) Very fast for me. Loaded practically instantaneous.

    2) Advanced searches and preferences. Good options. I don't really use them much though, unless i really can't find what i'm after.

    3) Design looks very nice. I think the balance is perfect. Graphics are crisp. I like the colours.

    4) Results. My site was well down the search, but that's my fault.

    5) Didn't see any bugs.

Good work i will certainly use the search engine from time to time.

    Craig
