Hi, I like the colors of the site. they're simple but they show expressiveness which is what i like.

The issues I have found are below:
    1. You need to make your menu more moveable if that makes sense, as in then you click on about me for instance the color of that background changes to show its active. and when you roll your mouse over the menu it gives something for clients to play with.
    2. I would lightbox the images on the front page and have another link saying "see more of my work" or something like that.
    3. remove the powered by link. It's not really needed for clients to know who your being hosted by.
    4. remove your email from the homepage (replace it with a contact me link to your contact form) This will prevent spammers wanting to sell you viagra etc...
    5. on your contact link make a contact form instead of a direct link to email. this has 2 effects (i)because it will prevent spam (ii) because it will cause potential clients to not bother contacting you, noone wants to type anyones email into their box.. they want something simple.

    Hope this helps!

The change of the background from black to white (about me link) ... seems abrupt ... but it may just be me.

As for the contact form, i believe visitors should have the possibility to choose wich way they prefer to initiate contact. Personaly i prefer to avoid contact forms. So the solution for me is for the websites to have a contact form AND have their email adress available for whom wishes to use their email prog.

Thanks for the suggestions. A couple of comments:
@ m3n0tu18: I like your suggestions and will start working on them ASAP. There is a very good reason behind the "Powered By" link. It's part of a business deal.

@porty: I changed the color of the about me page for readability. Reversing the copy literally became a headache for the viewer. I will expermienet with the page though to see if I can work out another solution. And thanks for the link about unspam

I will not go into details, but a study shows that in most instances, people are more comfortable reading text from a white background. It's quite comparable to reading a book. In your situation, I found it welcoming and did not deviate from the color scheme of the website. As far as your thumbnails go, you might want to add more description in the lightbox or before it. People do not like to think when they are browsing. having a brief description up front helps your cause.

BTW: some sites get away with not having a contact form, but the reason that you should is accessibility. Instead of a potential client having to leave your site to send you an email, they can do it right there. You want them to stay on your site for as long as possible. Furthermore, not too many people use Outlook these days with all of the mobile device craze.

I made most of the changes suggested this evening, including the form, which I thought was important. Thanks for the suggestions! Tagging the lightbox images will be next.

Try floating the form to the right so it's part of the first thing they see on your contact page.

I've seen the same study DanExcell has about the black on white. Having said that, in your case, it works for the home page. I'd keep it across the board if I could, as Porty suggested. It's a good color scheme.

You already explained the "powered by" link, which also bothered me...those always bother me. Everyone else just said what I was thinking so...I really don't have much to add. One very minor thing, though, just so I contributed something...make your home page link www.ballardstudio.com (not /index.html). That'll avoid any duplicate content issues.

The generic red jumped out at me wrong, but I really like your mouseovers for the menu. And why is your about page white? Doesn't match the rest of the site.

I changed the red, so its not the generic red that was used yesterday. As for the About Me page bein white, I changed the color of the page for readability. Reversing the copy literally became a headache for the viewer. Using white, although throws off the color scheme, is easier to read. I may experiment with using grey as the body copy color instead.
