Just joined today, not sure why I hadn't been using these boards before now.

Anyway, I have a little design blog, I've been messing around with. I didn't spend a lot of time on the design (about a day) cause I wanted to get the site up and running. But now I'd like to get a little bit of feedback on the design, usability and anything else you want to comment on.

I have a lot of space I'm not really using very well. The area under the header is just random stuff that could be put to better use, I'm just not sure what yet. I also want to add a Poll to the sidebar, replace that square image. The menu is pretty useless, but I still have other features of the site I'm working that will be rolled out sometime next year.

All I can say is the design is simple, but there are just a lot of menus in there.

Honestly, the big thing for me is the tag cloud. I hate those friggin' things. They never look good no matter how they're done. They're just a giant clusterfrick, even when they're "organized".

Your site's got decent, original content...so that's your biggest problem. The Disqus commenting thing seemed to work okay.

As far as your SEO info goes, some of your beginner links are potentially pretty dangerous. Linking to anything that Danny $ullIvan is involved in is never a good thing, and SEOmoz are nothing more than a bunch of junk scientists spouting theories. I don't blame you for linking to them...they market themselves well. But the best SEOs are the ones who don't go selling services and tools and writing about it. Think about it...if you had a real competitive advantage tool, would you sell it to Random Idiot X?

Make your resolutions fit most computers. Right now I cant see 1/5 of the site width wise. It's way to wide for the crappy mac computer i'm using now. Besides that I like the design.

Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks.
But of course, if you dig deeper, itís really how it works.

I hear yah about the tag cloud. I am thinking about doing a combination of 1) a drop-down menu 2) putting 4 main categories in the sidebar with 2-4 subcats under them. Still not an ideal solution but so far I've been covering a lot of different stuff and think it is necessary to show that in some way.

Yah, that is on my list. I made the site 1200 pixels which is huge. I'll probably do mobile, 800px, 1000px, 1200px responsive design one of these days, but I wanted to get a final "look" nailed down first.

Looks good. The only concern I have is that it is not immediately obvious what the site is about.

Couchable - what does that mean? I'm sure that several definitions will come to mind for some here, but they have nothing to do with web design.

I had originally intended the site to be about freelancing and working from home, but I've been writing a lot about design too. So yah the name doesn't really make that much sense, but I don't really want to buy another domain at this point.

Until you decide what the site is about it doesn't make a difference. Once you decide you can simply add a word in the header.
