Hi everyone. I'm a new webmaster hoping to get a little input. I've been studying web design for a while but still consider myself a complete novice. I just started my site. It's a site that gives people ideas on ways to supplement their income and make some extra money. The content is pretty weak currently, but I'm not worried about that I have huge improvements coming in that area.

What do you all think of the design? I'm hoping for some helpful input from a few experts, maybe some ideas on what could work better. I am thinking of eventually adding a top navigation bar when I get a little more content.
    Any input is greatly appreciated!

I have a few suggestions that will help you out a little.

    1. You need some type of main navigation bar. I looked through some of the pages on the website and realized that there was no way of accessing the main page. You mentioned that you plan on adding one once you get more content. I suggest adding a main nav bar now because your visitors need complete access to the standard information pages (main page, about us, contact us, and so on) even if the content is not all there yet.

    2. There is an issue with the overall page organization on your index page.

The content in the sidebars seem to be a little scattered. On the left sidebar, you have information about different topics, an ad, links, and then more information on website topics.

You also placed large ads in between the content which is distracting and makes the page look cramped. Try separating the ads a little more so the page doesn't look cramped.

Also, the contact link is at the bottom of the page and is harder to notice then it should be.

Try moving some things around to make the page look more organized.

    3. Last, I think you just get rid of the google search bar. Right now the website is to small for there to be a need to use it

There is nothing on the site except advertising and external links. That, coupled with the two link drops in the original post, leads me to suspect this is spam.

If it is not spam, I'd like to hear from JobsAllOver, he needs to post more details about the purpose of the site and how he plans to go about getting more content. If I don't have some sort of reply from him within 24 hours, I'm deleting the thread as spam.

You shouldn't have the ads there from the start. Maybe one if you have to, but you're not gonna earn money untill you get tons of visitors, and it will be easier to get tons of visitors WITHOUT THE ADS. I'm horrified by the amount of ads. The content is weak like you said; the site looks like a spam site at the moment. Fix the content asap.

When I go to a site with ads all over it I move on real fast like with no intentions of ever returning to it again.

Thanks Blackhawk! All your ideas were really helpful. You're right, I should get started on the main navigation bar right away. I'm still kind of working on the organization because I am weeks away from showing anything to the general public, but thanks a ton for helping me out.

Alphamare - Didn't you read my post at all? I'm just looking for some ideas on the overall design or anything that could improve my site, BESIDES more content. I'm not looking for content review, and none of my internal pages are even close to complete articles yet. I would be grateful if you would return my links(you can nix one if you think it is overkill). I would be even MORE grateful if you gave me some ideas for my site...

Mr Teapot -Thanks for looking but yes, I am well aware it looks ad-ridden at the moment.I'm not marketing my site yet though, just looking for a few pointers. Thanks.

Personally, I think you need to start from scratch. It's not the worst looking website I seen on these forums, but it just doesn't function at all. Especially with the ads, I didn't know there was a nav bar.

Yes, I did read your post, and I did look at your site. And the main thing I can say that will improve your design is content.

A site cannot be reviewed properly without looking at all the elements; content, layout, functionality, images, colours, code... In many cases the content dictates the design. For example, you would not expect a news site to use pastel pinks and lavenders as the colour scheme, nor would you expect the most important content to be in a sidebar or below the fold.

Really, until you have more than ads on the site, there really is not much design to review. Your colour scheme is OK - the background image is a decent gradient and the header graphic is OK. All in all, nothing outstanding or very original, and no way to tell whether or not it suits the site until the content is visible.
Here are some things to think about:
    • How many pages do you anticipate having on the site? (Home, About, Contact, etc.)
    • What will the layout of each page be?
    • Will there be images? Where will they be positioned?
    • How are the articles and daily tips going to be laid out?
    • Will there be a page for each article, or excerpts on a main page with links to the full article elsewhere on the site?
    • Will people be able to comment on the articles?
    • If so, where will the comments appear?
    • Will there be an archive of older articles?
    • If so, how will it be laid out? Grid-style, list-style?
    • And how will it be sorted? By topic? By date? Both?
    • Who will be writing the articles?
    • If you will be accepting articles and tips from the public, what will the procedure be? Will they be submitted to you or another administrator for review before posting?
    • How will they be uploaded?
    • If you're going to write all the content yourself, how often do you plan to publish?

These are all important questions, and I'm sure there are many more. You need to think about this, because the answers will have a direct bearing on the design for the site.

I won't return the links - they are not necessary and the rule about links is very clear. I don't understand why you feel you need three links to the same site in one post to begin with.
