Welcome to the forums. Please read the Forum Rules so you'll have an idea of the way things work here. For example, "Links to external content should be kept to a minimum, and should only be used if they relate to the thread subject."

That said, I am not partial to dark sites. I would have thought that given the topic you might have gone with a lighter palette.

I see you have built it on the Catalyst WordPress Framework, using the Dynamik Child Theme. That's a very flexible combination - what customizations did you make to the basic theme?

Typical WP site, this one actually took a out 6 seconds to load and show me anything... About 4 seconds to long for me before I hit the back button.

From the start, slider images can use -1 second for the transition! Text in the div with opacity sticks close to the container! at least 20 pixels on left should do Menu items(home, about etc.) should at least be bold if you're to keep the font size as same. Links are hard to see in the div with opacity, make them bright! and labels like upcoming events on the sidebar can use bold Upcoming events widget in the footer too can use at least 20 pixels margin left. so as to leave equal spaces from left and right( beyond log in ) in the footer. Rest everything is fine and good template

I don't mind the dark backgrounds but the photos on it are over powering they're so large and the type is to small. The majority of our sites are built with dark backgrounds...easier on the eyes.

I think a lot of designers now are forgetting about our viewers that are visually impaired, and there are millions of them. Zooming a site so they can read it can be frustrating for them as it is but when other things on the site attack them such as large photos and text so large they fill a monitor.

We build all of our sites where the majority of impaired readers can zoom 25% above the normal 100% and read a page and no more than 50% above normal.

Wow. I hardly ever use dark backgrounds for my sites. There has been good research done about why it is harder on the eyes to read light fonts on dark backgrounds.

Now, I'm an atheist, so maybe I'm hypersensitive in this regard (I'm willing to admit it if I am). But the first two things I thought of when I looked at the site were:

    1) What a pantload. If you start talking to me about "armies of awakening" and "the last days" and other doomsday-style prophecies, I think of the mass misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar (there are going to be some people with a lot of egg on their face come December 21) and the people who thought the world would come to an end when we entered 2000. The latter didn't happen, the former isn't going to, and the "armies of awakening" just seems like religious propaganda to me.

    2) I read the mission statement and I can't even figure out what you're doing. You're planting churches? What does that even mean? If churches start springing up like the plant hair on a Chia-Pet, I'd be somewhat concerned about the structure of the buildings.

That, and the whole dark background, make this feel like a cult to me. I look at this site and I visualize something along the lines of Jonestown or maybe Order of the Solar Temple.

Anyone else get that vibe from this thing?

DId I say we used light fonts and you must be looking at different research than we do. Course, anyone can do a survey and call it.."the research". I wear progressive lens glasses, white backgrounds with small black fonts are difficult to read for me. When I look at a white background it's like looking a bright light bulb.
My husband, two oldest daughters and one sister in law are architectural engineers looking at Autocad, Solid Edge 3D and Microvellum 8 hours a day and they'll tell you, that wouldn't happen looking at a white or light background.

We seem to have many clients with the darker backgrounds that are well satisfied and pay our bills so...the darker backgrounds it will be as long as they are happy and their viewers are happy. It's not what we want but what they want.

@bleau canon - I never said you used light fonts. I said they were harder to read. If you'd like my opinion of your black on grey that you use on the site, I find it very difficult to read - in fact in this particular case a larger font or a lighter background would be beneficial to readability.
