Hotel Website Desperately in need of a re-vamp

Hi. I'm new to this forum, hope this isn't the wrong place to post this.

The Beach Lodge Hotel and Restaurant, Negombo

I've just been handed over developer duties by the management of this lovely rustic beachside property's website. (I have barely touched it, it was built 'from scratch' by the previous guy and is a wordpress site) As you might see, this site is very badly designed to say the least and to come up with a stunner of a site for such a business and brand shouldn't be too hard to do. However, I am no professional myself, and have limited experience with wordpress's divi theme, which is the theme running. I'd really like some help knowing where to start with redoing the whole thing, should I continue on divi (wordpress is insisted on by the management) especially what colours would work best, what type of layout, etc. This site is also seeing very few visitors per day, and has major SEO problems.

    Thank you.

To be blunt, your question makes no sense whatsoever. The site is bad, but it should be easy to make an awesome site, but you don't even know what colors to select never mind what to do to make it an awesome site...oh yeah, and it has "major SEO problems", which is vague and doesn't indicate much of anything (other than "we don't like the traffic we're seeing so we'll assume it's SEO").

Here's the problem that you're not a professional, and you're trying to fix a site that may or may not be broken in any significant way for a company that is in a hypercompetitive industry (i.e. travel/tourism) and located in an area (Sri Lanka) that isn't exactly known for being tourist-friendly. That's too much for any professional to fix, never mind a non-professional. The major hotel chains have entire teams working on their sites full-time with researched, battle-tested, and working tools, and your hotel wants to go at them with the equivalent of a knife in a tank war (i.e. WordPress). Not gonna happen. No amount of "SEO" will fix that if you follow the conventional "SEO Guru" advice out there.

So if your thinking is "hey, if I just take one of the WordPress themes and pick out some nice colors and find some graphics and stock photos to jazz it up and it will magically fix everything"...stop thinking that way. If your thinking is "I'm going to slowly but surely spend several months to possibly several years trying different things, testing, seeing what works and what doesn't, fine-tuning, and doing it properly" stand a puncher's chance, but it's not a given.

I think colours etc. should not be the main concern at the moment, it is not the biggest problem. The website is not good at doing what it needs to do - introduce the users to the Beach Lodge. The homepage looks like some random elements scattered around, instead of telling a story what it is and why it is a great choice. The room prices are not shown, you can create a reservation without seeing the prices (seriously??), no information about the difference between the several types of rooms - basically completely useless for users who want to book. Since I travel quite a lot, I've visited many websites of small hotels, many of them looked worse than yours - and that was not really a problem (it is understandable that small properties might not be able to afford modern custom developed websites), as long as I could get what I needed easily.

So yeah, start with the content, it is usually the hardest bit.

I have analyzed your website and there are a few things that you need to fix the SEO. I have listed them for you below:

    1. Use your page's headers properly (reduce the H1 tags to only one and increase the other H tags).
    2. Add a Google+ Publisher to the website.
    3. Make sure that the website works on all screen sizes (eg. mobile phone and tablet devices).
    4. Improve the load time (currently it takes 2.56 seconds).
    5. Use an SSL certificate - https (you already have one that expires in 2 years).
    6. Fix your backlinks (you only have 1 at the moment).
    7. Link your social media pages to your website.
    8. Add ALT attributes to all the images on the website (right now 5 out of 15 images are missing the ALT attribute).
    9. Update the website's robots.txt and XML Sitemap (don't forget to submit the site map to Google).

Once you do all this, you website will be ready for SEO
