I posted an early prototype at WDF and received some useful feedback.

    The site has launched.

I said it once and I'll say it again: I love this design!

    Gripes:
Ads - WTF does a school newspaper neeed with ads??? Especially on the main page. Articles if you must, but main page ugh.

Your nav needs to be pushed over a little to the left so that black line continues up and there isn't that akward white space going on.

    Hey Brak,

Thank you for the kind words.

They need ads as a source of revenue. I don't mind advertising-- it's a fact of life and you see it on all mainstream sites. It's just a shame that the Herald has such tacky advertisers.

The navigation and line are where I intended them to be, but thank you for commenting on something you found weird.

Is it possible to have an image as a background or even a color other than white? I think a lot of sites miss this and it's hard to keep my attention on your mainly dark gray header and page when there's a few hundred pixels of whitespace grabbing my eye.

Other than that I will say I don't like the yellow used for the background of the Headlines and Opinions, but I guess it doesn't absolutely need to change.

    Overall a great site,

    Hi Brad,

If the white space you're talking about is where I see it on the main page, that's the region that should be grabbing one's attention-- it contains the navigation and the main column of content.

As for the background of Headlines and Opinions, I'm going for a light beige. While I'm aware that colors appear differently on different monitors, I'm also aware that some colors are more prone to inconsistency than others.

Do you have a recommended RGB value for a light, beige cream color that I might take a look at?

    Thanks.

Personally, it's not "ivy" enough for me. My favorite ivy site (meus alma mater) is:

hmmm, no offence but i dont like this site too much - I dont know but everything seems a little "packed in". In my opinion the second column in the main area (the one beginning with Latest Headlines) should be moved to the other side of the ads, outside the main area. Then the main page can stretch to the width of the whole of the middle... bit.

Also, maybe get some rollovers on the navigation? The sites very well desigend and the graphics are ace, i especially like the little search box where it is

    overrall, nice work, dude.
