Do some research on "Custom Post types".
You can create a custom type for your home page that will show the image only on that page, in the same way that some themes have a slider only on the home page.
    Check out:
Good design should never say "Look at me!"
It should say "Look at this." ~ David Craib ~ my current site . . ~ my email

If you feel that someone's post helped you fix your problem, answered your question, or just made you feel better, feel free to "Like" their post. The "Like" link is at the bottom right of each post, along side the "reply" link. And if you are being helped here, try to help someone else - pass it on!

I would either recommend a front page slider, that will only add it to the home page or making a new template for your theme.

To make a new template: Open your index.php file and copy everything in there into a new file and on top of everything, add this:
    Template Name: Homepage with Slider

In the code, add your header image where you want it (probably in a div tag below the navigation divs). Save the file as say: homepage.php
Once uploaded via ftp, you will be able to choose your template in the panel on the right hand side when creating the page.
