Need Help Removing index.php from url

I am helping out someone with an existing WordPress site. Permalinks were set to

I need to remove the index.php portion of the url.

    1. I changed the Permalinks structure but then the pages no longer work and turn into a 404 error.
    2. I have the "redirect" plugin but concerned it may cause SEO/PR problems.
    3. I have watched several videos about changing the htaccess file but I don't even know how to find it, let alone change without breaking something.

    Can you please advise me?

    Your help is very appreciated.

Hi - I wish I could help, but this is not a problem i have encountered before.

I have moved your post to the WordPress forum, since your problem is specific to WordPress.
