    wordpress testing server issues

So I've taken over the maintenance of a website for someone. The website was built by someone else and Wordpress was used to construct the entire thing. What I'm trying to do is set up a testing server on a subdomain of the main url, i.e. After I had duplicated the files onto the testing server I started to make changes to the content for updates etc. Unfortunately anything that I alter on the test server seems to automatically be applied to the live site as well without me uploading the updates files from the test server to the live one. For example after placing the duplicate files on the test server I then ran a script which is used for updating the root url from to .Unfortunately this change is applied to the live server immediately as well. Also, absolutely any change I make on the test server is automatically applied to the live server hence defeating the purpose of having a testing site.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution/workaround?

You're using the same database tables as you are on the original.
