Hello, can anyone suggest me any ways on real life or Web to get some extra money because I want to buy a new PC and I have to put half money. It is arround 700 euros Can u suggest me any ways of making some money ??? (And don't tell me work, im only 16 and working is illegal from that age :P)
I found 200€ from translating a Web program into Greek language. Any other suggestions ???

No offense tartarugaomoses, but get you facts straight. Each processor has its pluses and minuses. It's not as simple as you make it look like.

i would contact your MP, citizen advice bureau or whatever you have in Greece to find out exactly what the laws are, i am sure that you would be allowed to do some form of paid work at 16

If not, under the table work is always an option. What about working for your parents/friends?

1) 700 euros is different from USD$700.
2) Dells are a very basic computer and a web designer would probably want more. PCs made by large companies are designed to make the numbers look as high as can be at the lowest price possible. Their target audience doesn't know what the difference between RAM types (etc.) is, so they go with the cheapest. I have nothing against Dell, I am just putting in my opinion.
3) Gigahertz is little more than a number, and it has almost nothing to do with performance. An Athlon XP 1.8 Ghz can outperform a P4 2.8 Ghz in benchmarks.

In what benchmarks? are you saying 1.8Ghz or "1800++ MP" or whatever their marketing jargon naming convention is?

The true standard for measuring processor speed is Floating Operations Per Second (FLOPS).

We're somewhere in the GigaFlop range with GigaHertz computers... I really don't care enough to check on a regular basis.

They named it, say 1800+, because 1.2 Ghz or whatever it is doesn't look good in the eyes of everyday schmucks. They call it 1800+ to remind people that it can outperform a 1.8 Ghz processor because of its Quantispeed Architecture. BTW I was pretty much guessing just to make a point on those numbers, so don't quote me on it. But I believe that's about what it is. It's sad how Intel's advertising has convinced people it's better (most people would recognize the name "Intel," but I doubt most have even heard of "that other A-something-D company").

But nevertheless, I don't think I made it clear in my last post that processor really doesn't matter that much anyway. Unless you're doing a lot of DV or MP3-ripping, my personal opinion is that it will do you little good. Actually, a fast hard drive and RAM will do you more good than a 3 Ghz P4 ever would. Unless, of course, you're someone who wants their dial-up Internet connection to be faster so they go out and buy a brand-new $1500 PC.

My 800mhz Duron with 512 PC133 Ram, 5krpm 30gig HD 64mb GF2 outperforms most of my friends brand-new-out-of-the-box ~2ghz dells for the applications we (college students) use them for and then some.

In my experience ram is the most vital speed element of a computer. 256 is a MINIMUM for computers today - and that's just for system speed. I'd advise 512+. If you have to use swap disk for memory you're computer's going to go at 10% (wild guess) the speed.

For example: I recieved a free laptop a while ago. Its a compaq 500mhz celeron with 64 (4 for video)ram. It used to take 5 seconds to open IE. 30 seconds to open photoshop 6. I recently put a 256 stick (effectively up to 312mb), IE opens in less than a second - photoshop in about 4.

Hard drive speed seems to be the next most vital element in speed. A lot of people never notice your computer rarely relies on CPU speed as it's limiting overall speed factor. It's a lot like the limiting reagent in chemistry. The slowest member of the herd is how fast the whole herd moves at. If you're running off some slow HD, you're computer's going to run like ass.

I would assess what you need your computer for and go from there. DVD ripping is going to take a MASSIVE amount of hardcore crunching (CPU). CD ripping is fast enough and efficient enough now-a-days I wouldnt' worry about it. Also compiling large programs will take a lot of CPU crunching. But if you're just developing webpages, listening to music, chatting, browsing the internet and the occasional p2p program, I would go for RAM, not CPU. 1gig DDR ram will give you amazing performance for the amount it costs.


Honestly, at this point all I want for my computer is some more storage space. I recently started recording songs and it takes up a lot of room to keep full quality music (wav/aiff/etc).
