I actually feel the same way about messing with search, but for a different reason...people aren't looking for social connections. They're looking for results. Sometimes putting in a non-webpage result makes sense...for example, if I typed in 'Antioch, California", I might want to see a map of where it's located and what's around it. That's okay. But I don't see the practical benefit in finding a social connection within a search, and Google runs the slight risk of running afoul of antitrust legislation and/or pressure from the tinfoil hat community in that regard.

I agree. Just because I know someone that runs a pizza place doesn't mean I want their business showing up when I search for best "Italian Restaurant in Indianapolis"

Unfortunately it's close to the best. Indy needs some better fine dining. Too many chains!

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Any particular reason you included a double link drop to non-social-networking resources to back up your non-point, then?

Are you saying to have your friends put YOUR link on their addresses? I'm confused.

Social Networking sites like Facebook are the best. Blogs can be helpful too :)

Well, for effective use of twitter as a medium of marketing, you'll require a set of interested followers. Most of the twitter marketers gather their follower from Twiends like websites. Most of this follower group usually not from same interest group, so they click on some of your tweets, but they leave as soon as they find your website is not of their interest.

Try to gather some interested followers. It will take some time but will definitely work for you.

I guess you don't know about how to use facebook effectively for marketing. Try to read some related articles.

The problem with general statements ( Facebook is the best marketing tool ), its that it IS A GENERAL STATEMENT.

Sure there's a lot of people on Facebook, but not every product or every service can be benefit from a Facebook presence. Same with twitter or any other "social media" project. Most of the time, the time spent marketing to the Facebook presence is more costly than the limited benefit they may get.

If you can tell me how to market high efficiency heat exchangers Or brake rotors Or lumber, I may change my tune, if you can tell me how Facebook is gonna help a local condo cleaning service...

The point is, for every 1 product or service that can be marketed and promoted on Facebook there are 10 that would be a waste of time and energy. So a general statement is BS and your generic statement of "you must not know how" is not only BS, but downright stupid.

Instead of making generic statements, provide some facts on how you would market a product that has a global market in the hundreds of millions of dollars, is sold primarily to energy product businesses. How would you market it effectively on Facebook or Twitter.

Create a Facebook business page ? Done that. Used their ads ? Done that... Abysmal failure, what would YOU DO ?

Marketing in social networking site is like trial and error. There are a lot of success stories on facebook marketing, you just have to make cool and unique approached.

Create some ads on your facebook page, give discounts, sign up bonus.

Good generic advice for good generic products and services.

But for every 1 product and service that can benefit from Facebook, there are 10 that will just waste their time and money, because of this kind of regurgitated advice. Seriously, repeating the same thing over and over again is not going to make it work.

If you want to insist that Facebook and social marketing is a good thing, at least put the disclaimer that "this does not apply to every business", that's the only way your statement has a sembalance of truth.
